Do you know what the etymology of the word school is?  Originally in ancient Greece rich kids when they wanted to indulge their curiosity would seek out an expert in a subject, and learn. The word school originally pronounced as scholé meant indulging your curiosity. Fast forward to the modern world and you can literally find an expert in pretty much anything and ask as many questions as you want while you learn.

I enjoy learning, the topics I’m studying are things I am curious about.My educational motivation is best described as, I am a sponge that absorbs knowledge. I want to help others learn and progress in their careers and ignite that spark of curiosity.

I’m interested in being a mentor because this is something I do today at IBM. I honestly love it and it would be that much rewarding if I was helping out my people instead! So why not!?

I am a Product Specialist/Data Analyst at a fintech startup in Toronto. Data was always a point of interest for me, and a few years after graduating I decided to take courses in data. Outside of work and family, I try to spend time getting through (or attempting to) my to be read/to be watched list, writing, or planning out whatever outdoor trips I can.

One of the things that are always reiterated in the SiT community in slack and elsewhere is for each of us to pay things forward. It's something I grew up with, something I've witnessed a lot at SiT. My boss has also, in the year I've known him, really shown me exactly how beneficial mentorship is for both mentor and mentee. Couldn't think of a better way to pay forward those lessons than here.

Often when I'm working on projects I don't see people that look like me. I have been open to mentoring throughout my career and even hired interns. I like to help build careers and build bridges for those looking to become professional software engineers. I hope that by mentoring people I can pass on knowledge that they wouldn't learn in school or that would take years of experience to learn. My process is project based learning as that is what helped me become good at what I do. I can provide books and resources (free) and expect that if I spend time teaching that the mentee will spend time learning.
